Although there is a lot of police in Panama, especially downtown(you'll see them on mountain bikes), there sometimes can occur problems, mainly in the areas with many poor people. Casco Viejo or Maranon(around the market), or Calidonia can all be dangerous, although they are very patrolled nowadays. So, as a general advice, take care in these areas at night!
